Sam Tan Wei Shen Singaporean is first foreigner to be tops at US naval academy

Naval officer Sam Tan Wei Shen became the first foreign student to achieve top graduate honours at the prestigious United States Naval Academy (USNA) on Tuesday.

Lieutenant Sam Tan Wei Shen, 24, topped his batch of 1,099 American and foreign cadets. Studying at USNA is very competitive as candidates vying for top honours are cadets handpicked by American and selected foreign navies worldwide.

Lt Sam Tan Wei Shen's cohort included 14 cadets from 12 countries, including Pakistan, Taiwan and Romania, reported The Straits Times (ST).

"I was surprised because the guys I was training with were Navy Seals and some were even going to be astronauts. To be training with the best and brightest, and still come up tops is pretty amazing," Lt Sam Tan Wei Shen told ST from his hotel in Annapolis, Maryland in the US.

Former graduates of the academy include US former presidential candidate and Arizona Senator John McCain, former US President Jimmy Carter, and the first American to journey into space Alan Shepard.

Lt Sam Tan Wei Shen graduated from the Officer Cadet School here in 2008 and received the Singapore Armed Forces Merit Scholarship to study in USNA.

He began his training at USNA in 2008. There, he became the first foreign cadet in USNA's history in charge of administrative duties of the 4,400 cadets, the "size of the Republic of Singapore Navy", said Lt Sam Tan Wei Shen. One of his tasks as the brigade adjutant was to command the 4,400-strong ceremonial parades.READ FULL STORY HERE

Singapore Army Open House 2012 - First impressions

Note: I realise this post lacks images. My Canon PowerShot conked out and I'm going to get a replacement. May choose another brand this time. Many thanks to Jon who T-loaned his camera yesterday. : )

Strictly-speaking, a display of war machines and weapons outside a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) camp counts more as an exhibition rather than an open house.

With that context in mind, the Army Open House (AOH) 2012 which you can visit this Saturday and Sunday may give you the impression that it lacks the punch that previous editions of the AOH packed when the event was staged at the SAFTI Military Institute and SAFTI live-firing area in Pasir Laba.

Military enthusiasts would probably still troop down to the event anyway, so here's a suggestion of things you can see and do at the AOH.

Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen officiated at the opening ceremony of the Army Open House@Our City 2012 (AOH@Our City) this morning. Open to the public from 26 to 27 May 2012, visitors to AOH@Our City can look forward to a showcase of our 3rd Generation Army. Visitors can view the latest equipment, participate in rides and interactive activities. To mark the 45th anniversary of National Service (NS), the public will be able to visit the NS Showcase where they will be able to see images and listen to stories of past NS batches. The public will also get an opportunity to catch urban warfare demonstrations, scenario-based dynamic shows and performances by the Red Lions, SAF Band, Music and Drama Company and the Military Police.

Members of the Advisory Council on Community Relations in Defence, representatives from the Singapore National Employers Federation, Singapore Business Federation as well as Total Defence Award winners, Civil Resource owners and Trade Union leaders were hosted by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Defence and National Development, Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman to a visit at the AOH 12 on 24 May 2012. Singapore Hougang by-election 2012 Voting has closed

Hougang by-election: Voting has closed

Voting for the Hougang by-election has now closed as of 8pm.

As the counting of votes commences, results are expected by 11pm today.

83 per cent of voters in the Hougang by-election have cast their votes as of 5pm according to a statement by the Elections Department.

While the nine polling stations received a steady stream of people this morning, the crowd thinned closer to noon at some polling stations due to a downpour, reported The Straits Times (ST).

23,368 voters are eligible to cast their votes.

The ST also reported that both candidates - Workers' Party's (WP) Png Eng Huat and People's Action Party's (PAP) Desmond Choo - have made the rounds of all the polling stations to take a look at the voting.

Polling for the Hougang by-election began at 8am today.

Some voters told a local media outlet that they chose to vote early as they need to work, or wanted to finish voting before proceeding to their usual routine.

The results for the by-election are expected to be announced before midnight today.

Come back to AsiaOne later today for more updates on the by-election.

Voting kicks off for Hougang by-election

SINGAPORE: Voting has started for the Hougang by-election.

As at noon, 48 per cent of 23,368 eligible voters have cast their votes.

Some residents started queueing up 15 minutes before the polling stations opened.

The candidate for the People's Action Party Desmond Choo was seen at the polling station at Block 363 Hougang Avenue 5.

The candidate for the Workers' Party Png Eng Huat was at the Holy Innocents Primary School polling station.

The Hougang by-election is a straight fight between Mr Choo and Mr Png.

SINGAPORE: Polling for the Hougang by-election has closed.

Ballot boxes from the nine polling centres were sealed before being moved to the counting centres.

The counting centres are at the Serangoon Secondary School and Holy Innocents' Primary School.

Some 40 elections officials will count the votes.

The Elections Department said that as of 5pm, 83 per cent of 23,368 eligible voters have cast their ballot.

PAP candidate Desmond Choo is vying for the single-seat constituency with Workers' Party's Png Eng Huat.

The two candidates will be making their rounds to the counting centres to oversee the counting process. The election agents of the candidates are also at the counting centres to oversee the process.

Mr Choo had urged voters to pick the best man and vote for a new beginning in Hougang.

"We are at a crossroads today. Continue with the status quo in Hougang or make a change now! If you continue with the status quo, you are going to get four more years of the same thing. And if I may say, four years of the same is four years too long!" Mr Choo had said.

Mr Png's message to voters is that Hougang should remain in opposition hands to act as a check on the ruling People's Action Party (PAP).

The Workers' Party has held the Hougang seat since 1991.

The seat fell vacant in February after former Member of Parliament Yaw Shin Leong was expelled from the Workers' Party, following reports of his personal indiscretions.

Mr Yaw had won the seat in the May 2011 General Election with 64.8 per cent of the vote.

The Hougang by-election comes exactly 20 years since Singapore saw its last by-election.

Hougang By-Election: Live blogging from 8pm

Live blogging of results will start at 8pm.

Follow The Straits Times reporters in Hougang as they bring you the latest, leading to the announcement of the winner of the Hougang by-election.

Xiaxue blog Xiaxue (aka XiaSuay) fights back against Facebook abuse

Blogger Xiaxue fights back against Facebook abuse
She posts on blog pictures of those who insulted her over PAP rally photos

BACKGROUND STORY

BULLIES

Singaporean men are such bullies. They think I'm a nobody - just a random girl they can bully.

- Ms Wendy Cheng, also known as blogger Xiaxue

MEN who this week called popular blogger Xiaxue a 'stupid bimbo' and a 'whore' online are getting a taste of their own medicine.

She is fighting back by posting their photos and information on her blog, in an attempt to show that they do not have much of a leg to stand on in the looks and intelligence department themselves.

The furore started when photos of her with two friends, taken without permission from their blogs, surfaced on the Facebook page of political website Temasek Review on Monday, Tuesday and yesterday, with an invitation to caption them.

The photos of the three - Xiaxue and her friends Qiu Qiu and Sophie - were taken at a People's Action Party (PAP) rally in Aljunied GRC during last May's general election. In the photo, Xiaxue, 28, and Qiu Qiu, 24, have PAP logos on their faces.

In her blog, Xiaxue has never made her support for Singapore's ruling party a secret.

Commenters responded to the Temasek Review's invitation readily: 'Cheap b****,' said one.

'Pretty and sexy girls, which part of Geylang they work?', said another.

Xiaxue, whose real name is Wendy Cheng, posted on her blog yesterday: 'I don't know what is their problem (sic) because as I said, I have not uttered a word about this election and the photos are one year old.'

To get back at them, she trawled Facebook for their photos and information - and Facebook was obliging, because many of their profiles were public.

'I did not hack their accounts or even snoop very hard,' she said. 'Their details and pictures can be found by anyone who clicks on their Facebook profile upon seeing their comments on Temasek Review's Facebook page, which has over 10,000 likes.'

She added: 'What kind of men would say this kind of thing? Singaporean men are such bullies. They think I'm a nobody - just a random girl they can bully.'

Among the men who featured in her gallery of 'bullies' were several who are married with children.

When asked by The Straits Times yesterday whether putting up their pictures meant she was stooping to their level, Xiaxue was unapologetic.

She said: 'No, I would never ever talk about somebody like that unless they personally attacked me. How can I sink to their level, to call them a sex worker in such a derogatory manner?'

She is no stranger to hostile online feuds, or 'flaming', herself, having written profanity-strewn posts about those who have got her goat in the past.

Asked why online commenters are hostile, sociopolitical blogger Siew Kum Hong said there is a 'herd instinct' at work, exacerbated by the anonymous nature of online interaction.

He said: 'You don't see the other people in front of you. You don't have to deal with the discomfort that it can cause.'

He noted, however, that in the past, such 'flame wars' took place on more niche forums such as Sammyboy, rather than on Facebook, 'which is very much in your face'.

He does not think Singapore needs a law or official code for online conduct, but said it will be difficult to change online interaction, because people must want to do the right thing themselves.

'There is no silver bullet, no easy answer. You are free to do it, because there are few repercussions... It has to be intrinsic: You realise that you will hurt someone, and there is a human being at the receiving end.'

One of the victims of Xiaxue's revenge, swim coach Lim Soon Chwee, 34, told The Straits Times last night that his comment, 'Pretty and sexy girls, which part of Geylang they work?' was incomplete.

'I didn't mean that at all,' he said, adding that he was actually trying to defend her.

'She's a public figure and she's probably just trying to increase the number of eyeballs on her blog.'

When he told his wife about Xiaxue's post, she just laughed, he said.

Another man who got one back from Xiaxue, Mr Hong Xing, a 35-year-old father of one, was less forgiving, because the photo Xiaxue held up for ridicule also featured his wife and child.

The engineer admitted that he had insinuated that Xiaxue was an underage prostitute, but said he preferred women in more conservative clothes.

'Look at what she is wearing. When she bends down, you can see her breasts,' he said, adding that he has seen prostitutes in Geylang who dress this way.

He added that he might not have posted the comment if he had known she would see it, but that she should not have posted photographs of his family online.

He said: 'My wife feels really bad. This is between Xiaxue and me. She shouldn't have attacked my family.'

From her blog http://xiaxue.blogspot.com/
It's freaking election time again in Singapore. I don't know what the dude at Hougang did to cause a by-election but WHY?? I thought we won't have to face this crap in Singapore for another 4 years.

SO how now brown cow?
Xiaxue? She doesn't exist in my cyber-universe
A day before The Straits Times published their first story on Xiaxue, her blog post was aggregated into my Facebook (FB) newsfeed. I had initially thought of saying something but then, decided against it. The reason I decided not to say anything was because it will be an unnecessary distraction from the by-election.
I felt that the discussion may have shifted from the real issues for the by-election in Hougang, to if the supporters of the opposition were angry, bitter and self-righteous middle-aged men.
Not that she is right in her observation of course. For example, Khaw Boon Wan said last year that Tin Pei Ling's grandmother had got into a fight with a woman for bad-mouthing the PAP and Lee Kuan Yew. So, can I now assume that all PAP supporters are older people with a bad temper?
The Straits Times (ST) reported today that since Xiaxue blogged about her unpleasant encounter, some of her fans (I presume younger people), had come out strongly against those that made the original comment about Xiaxue, to even ask one of the 'victims of the bloggers revenge' if his six-year old daughter was a prostitute.
Can I now assume that all PAP supporters (by the fans association with Xiaxue, who is a PAP supporter), that all PAP supporters are uncouth youths?
The truth is, middle-aged, angry, bitter and self-righteous men; elderly with bad tempers and uncouth youths are everywhere - they support the opposition, as well as the PAP.
That was the reason why I was surprised when AWARE linked ST's first report on their FB page to frame a discussion on 'online misogny'. I felt that AWARE had chosen a wrong issue to frame that discussion.
Xiaxue's blog post was all about her and her intent was quite clear (at least to me), that she was not interested to discuss or debate issues like civil discourse on the internet, or even misogyny. Making use of the by-election and the PAP, she just wanted to draw more traffic to her website. That's what I meant when I said to ST that she was a 'shrewd businesswoman'.
As I have said elsewhere, I do not want to make a judgment call on Xiaxue on how she has handled the matter, but I note one of my friends comments on his FB about the reactions Xiaxue has gotten for her blog post saying, "There should be absolutely no place for Xiaxue on cyberspace. If you want to know more about the woman and her bigotry, google 'Xiaxue AND bangala/bangla'."
I have met Xiaxue before - when I was invited by Irene Ang's team to participate in her General Election special interview of George Yeo, but Xiaxue does not exist in my cyber-universe.
Some conspiracy theorists may content that this storm in the tea-cup of Xiaxue's, is created by the PAP to distract the people from the by-election in Hougang.  I think we all can ill-afford the little distractions, so that we may stay focused on the big picture.

Xiaxue.blogspot.com 24th May 2012

OMG!! I really can understand why she did that!! Read the blog HERE!
I mean like, those people leave REALLY BAD comments on her and expect that she keep quiet?
HELL NO!

It's their fault!  They deserve it! [ They ask for it!
They shoot those words to xiaxue first. What has xiaxue did that make them so angry and full of hate? ] Xiaxue didn't even know them loh! Or maybe she did, but she at least she never mention or bitch about them in her blog. I don't think that xiaxue will slam on anyone if it's not because of the person start it first..

I think that, generally, xiaxue is a nice person.. I honestly think so.. and she is funny! I like her sense of humor. When I see her video clip, she never fail to make me laugh. Just don't piss her off.. haha

Tsk tsk tsk.. Seriously.. Think before you said.. and stop hating other people..
I don't understand why people hate xiaxue..
Anyway, this entry is talking about xiaxue defending herself, this had nothing to do with PAP or any election..
